What are the main Google ranking factors for 2022?

Of Google’s 200+ ranking factors, I would say the most important is to consistently produce engaging content, i.e articles, product descriptions, reviews, etc. that are valuable enough to keep a reader’s attention, provide answers to their questions, and keep them onsite for longer.

In terms of technical SEO, some priorities include your site loading speed and whether it’s been optimized for mobile search. Make sure you have the right meta-tags and Schema markup on every webpage. This includes tagging your videos, FAQs, and images. These tags categorize content and help Google locate important information.

Quality, consistent content, fast-loading pages, and strategic meta-tagging are key.

How Do I start my own website?

Give thought to how your site construction and branding tie in best with your promoted product (s).

Specify your goal and list your requirements.  Steps include researching your market and competition, finding the right website builder,(that’s linked to a good page speed), as well as giving thought to your design and user experience. You’ll need to buy a domain name. Where possible, buying a domain with an existing backlink profile is a good option, as long as the links are of good quality.

Once your site is set up on a technical level, you’ll be ready to create your content. Depending on how you’re promoting your offers, you’ll want a strong content strategy geared to your brand. However, as a general rule, always be solving problems and answering questions in your content.

Whether you’re doing it by yourself, or with a small team of freelancers, you’ll need to invest time in high-quality content with the right backlinks and keywords, find the right website domain, and make your onsite user experience seamless. As your site gets bigger and brings in more traffic, you can use the above technical optimization steps to bring in organic traffic and rank higher in search algorithms. And dont forget to post content regularly.

Why is content optimization important?

Content can be informative, as with blog posts, or transactional, as with product descriptions, web pages, and similar. What they share in common is that they need to be seen by the widest audience possible. This isn’t possible without a clear SEO and PPC strategy. When the two work together, they’ll bring in organic/paid traffic simultaneously, while bolstering the site’s reach, reputation, and scalability.

When optimizing content, I always make sure to tag my images, title tags, and videos while keeping my keywords relevant and well-populated across the site. Other elements to take into account include adding FAQs to blogs and tagging the most relevant information with Schema markups. Simply put, Schema Markup is the code you’ll place on-site to provide information to Google for it to better understand and rank your content. SemRush has a good article on Schema which you can read here

How do I find SEO keywords?

Finding the right longtail keywords is just as important as it ever was. This and a solid PPC strategy will go a long way to promoting your brand, both directly and organically. You can find top keywords for your niche using tools like SeMRush and AHRefs. Look for low competition keywords as well as keywords unique to your niche or product offering. Avoid blackhat SEO tactics like keyword stuffing and do some research on your competitors with a tool like SE Ranking. Go through competitors’ pages/articles, make a list of long-tail phrases that are used repeatedly, and see if you can rank as well as, if not better.

What is a good Backlinking Strategy?

Sites need quality backlinking to rank higher and become more visible. These inbound links from other sites to your site are collected over time. Connect with other bloggers and website owners. Avoid buying backlinks from unverified sites.

Again, analyze your competition and understand their backlinking profile so that you can do what they’re doing, but better. You can measure your site’s search traffic using Google Search Console

Also, depending on the size of your site, you should be backlinking internally to relevant pages. Google has its own “crawl budget” where it’ll spend time analyzing your sites, tags, meta-descriptions backlinking profile, etc. Make it as easy as possible for them to see as much of your site in the shortest possible time.

If you have an important page with important keywords and added PPC advertising, position it as an anchor page and link back to it as frequently as possible, through your blog, product descriptions, and other channels.

Is a PPC Strategy a viable alternative to SEO?

You can rank organically on a minimal budget, whereas you’ll need to pay for PPC advertising, which can become expensive without the right targeting. Both strategies complement each other and should be used in unison. I’d say new site owners should start with organic SEO optimization and tackle  PPC strategy down the line.

How long does it take to start ranking with a new site?

It depends. You can start ranking pretty quickly with a blog whereas a fully-fledged site may take a few months to generate returns. That said, it really does depend on how much time you have to spend on your site’s content, design, and optimization tactics. If the site is a side project and you can only spend a few hours a week on it, your margin for growth will be a lot lower.

Final Thoughts?

Study your target market to better understand their search intent. Get to grips with high-ranking sites in your niche. Study their content, backlink profile, keyword strategies, and overall offering. Take the best elements, and use them to full force on your own site. Importantly, understand what Google values and how they categorize search intent.

Lastly, create quality content regularly, and always be answering questions!
